Agreement


How many times have you been in a conversation or a meeting and someone says something and everyone in the room agrees with them but you know darn well that idea or suggestion is bad or incorrect? THEN you find yourself agreeing as well because it’s just easier to nod in agreement then to speak up? Did you know this same thing happens in your head daily? How many times have you been walking through life and you get the idea that you are: not qualified, not smart enough, not pretty enough, not gifted enough, not loved enough, if only you were like that person you would be more successful, if only you could do that thing better you would have a breakthrough; and you come into agreement with that thought and all of a sudden your life changes because of the agreement you made with that thought?

We have gotten into the bad habit of agreeing with whatever is said TO us or ABOUT us. Whatever pops into our head we assume is a fact and then we act accordingly. The word agreement means, “have the same opinion about something; concur” but when we look at this word in the Bible it has the same connections as the word “covenant”. The preferred meaning of this Old Testament word is bond; a covenant refers to two or more parties bound together. This is fascinating because when we are in covenant with God there are rules and legal regulations put in place to ensure that covenant is kept. This actually works the same way when we agree with something that is a lie.

So, when we hear:

“your life has no meaning”

“there is nothing significant about you”

“you are un qualified to do anything important”

“you don’t measure up”

“you are stupid”

“you can’t do that”

“you are un lovable”

“no one wants to marry you”

“you are not valuable”

“you don’t matter”

“God can’t forgive that”

“grace won’t cover that”

“you are unworthy of forgiveness”

“you will be rejected”

….and the list goes on and on and on. This dialogue can play in our heads and before we know it, we have come into agreement, or covenant, with these lies and we are held to the rules and regulations these lies demand. When we come into covenant with something that is contrary to the Words God speaks over us, we begin to live a life that falls short of the triumph, victory, peace and joy God has created for us. We get stuck in a dysfunctional cycle of fear, lack, discontentment, worry, doubt, anger, bitterness, un forgiveness, hopelessness, offense and every other demonic emotion.

You can even be saved and have this ongoing battle. The enemy may not be able to attack you physically (because he would love nothing more then to completely take you out) so he goes after your thoughts. He knows once he can get you to come into agreement with one lie, it’s becomes easier and easier to get you to believe more. We have to be aware of what we are allowing to take root in our minds, what thoughts are we allowing to stay and what are we agreeing with? Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” When we guard our thoughts and we are intentional about what we allow to stay and what we dismiss as a lie, we can actually think with greater clarity and our mood adjusts as well.

God has a perspective that is so much higher then ours, His ways are so much better than ours so we need to start asking God what He is saying about things and get into agreement with Him on that. We can quickly come into agreement with the negative thoughts that pop into our heads, we come into agreement with the worst case scenarios.

For example (don’t judge me), I was flying to Washington DC November 8th, yes, election day. I wasn’t going for the election but happened to have a conference to attend in DC that week. As I was getting ready to go that morning, I began to think about the worst case scenario. I began to think about how my plane could go down or something catastrophic could happen in DC and what would happen to my kids. Then I thought about how I needed to wrap their Christmas presents so my husband wouldn’t have to do that because I wouldn’t be around to help and he would be lost without me. It got pretty bad and at one point I actually started crying as if I was mourning my own death. Then I heard, “are you coming into agreement with the spirit of death?” I immediately snapped out of it and began to declare life over myself and my family. I began to rebuke every demonic thought that popped into my head and reminded him that he doesn’t get to decide how my life goes, God does and I come into agreement with that. I even reflected on all of the promises that Got has made me that have yet to be fulfilled and I spoke myself right out of that mess! Needless to say, I am still alive.

2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV) says, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” we have every right to command thoughts that don’t line up with God, to go. They have no permission to stay unless we let them. But can you relate to this? We can slowly slip into agreeing with lies and pass them off as “God’s will” for our life. We need to take captive every single thought that does not line up with God’s will. When we don’t we are bound to the legalities attached to the lie which produces death. The death of relationships, dreams, opportunities, health, hope, joy, peace and sometime physical death. The thief comes to steal kill and destroy, that’s his job. Make it harder on him by being diligent about what you are agreeing with, do NOT agree with him agree with God!

So what do we do if we have come into agreement with a lie? And all of us have at some point in our life.

  1. Pray and ask God to expose the lies that you have come into agreement with.

  2. Write those lies down.

  3. Ask God what HE says about you, your life or that situation.

  4. Write God’s truth down (find a scripture to back it up)

  5. Repent for believing something that is contrary to what God is speaking over your life.

  6. Speak life where death was believed.

  7. Cancel every single assignment the enemy has unleashed on your life in Jesus’ name, because of the agreement you made with the lie.

Sometimes you will have to repeat this process until that lie is no longer a “truth” to you. You may be living a life where you feel like you are constantly being tormented, falling below your God ordained assignment, feeling isolated, constantly attacked mentally or physically I want you to know that God created you to live a victorious life, a life filled with joy, peace, grace, laughter, advancement and justice. Because of the cross and the Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives inside of you, you have every right to take back everything that has been stolen from you!
